31st Season | December 9th Concert

The Mesilla Valley Concert Band’s second free concert of the season is at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, 2018, in the Atkinson Recital Hall in the Music Center at NMSU. The program ranges from John Phillip Sousa’s The Glory of the Yankee Navy to W. Francis McBeth’s Of Sailors and Whales. The concert will also feature clarinet soloist Richard Shelburne on Ticheli’s Concerto for Clarinet and Wind Ensemble. Richard has been a member of the band’s clarinet section for many years and received his Music Performance degree from West Texas A&M.
The band’s conductor, Dr. William Clark, will be joined by four guest conductors for this concert. Dr. Michael Mapp, Director of Bands at NMSU, will lead the band’s performance of Dello Joio’s Satiric Dances. Dustin D. Seifert, Chair of the Music Department and Director of Bands at ENMU, will conduct On a Theme by August Enna by B.J. Brooks, a native of Portales and alumnus of ENMU. Kathleen Hill, CEO and String Instructor at the Central Coast Music Academy and Assistant Orchestra Director at Oñate High School, will conduct Stephen L. Melillo’s Festival of Light!. The band’s own Mr. Jim Young will conduct Alfred Reed’s arrangement of Greensleeves. The concert is free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first served.
